CrossFit Toronto is a family-run gym
created by Machiko Emoto & John Vivian.
Toronto’s Premier CrossFit Gym
Established in 2005, CrossFit Toronto is Toronto’s original CrossFit gym and the 2nd CrossFit gym in Canada.
We specialise in sustainable health & fitness habits for busy professionals, parents, and seasoned adults.
We believe in being serious about health & fitness while keeping a light-hearted attitude.
My sports history is playing basketball as a student and being good at running. But that all stopped after school.
I didn’t do much until I started CrossFit. That’s when things changed.
Since opening the gym in 2005 our vision has been the same: make functional fitness available to everyone & live a life with dignity.
If I hadn’t started training back then, I’d be a weak-ass, toothpick-looking, fragile woman who couldn’t pick up her own 8 year old daughter.
That’s when I realised that fitness isn’t just about now. It’s about being independent for life.
Now, imagine yourself at 80 years old.
Do you want to walk, take a shower, go to the washroom by yourself?
Good, I want you to have that, too.
What we provide is fitness for life.
We may not fully understand what high level athletes go through but we get everyday people’s struggles because that’s who we are.
We understand that getting out of the house for work can be hard enough, never mind making time to work out.
We get that you know you shouldn’t eat the last slice of pizza but your hand has its own mind and oh, wait, where did that pizza go?
I completely understand that you lose “motivation” for working out. Trust me, I’ve struggled with it for 10+ years.
I still have what I call “buddha belly” from my 2 kids and it seems like I found muffin top overnight.
But I keep at it because I’ve learned that health & fitness is both a state and a goal.
Don’t get your guard up because we are a CrossFit gym, though.
And please, don’t ever say to yourself “I have to get fit before I start CrossFit.”
All of us work hard in the gym but we know that we are not athletes and we don’t pretend to be.
We may be serious about our training but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Our members enjoy chatting with other members as much as the workouts.

In 2003 I was an IT guy who drove a desk 8-10 hours a day.
Then I went home and either drove a desk for a few more hours or lounged on the couch. With a beer. Or 5.
And ordered in. Of course.
Lunch was BK or McD’s, and a couple of times a week I’d splurge on a gourmet burger plus a couple of beers.
I was over 215lbs and climbing, wearing 40″ pants, and couldn’t hit a flight of stairs without sweating buckets.
Because I was out of shape.
Horrifically out of shape.
I hit a defining moment and started running in the mornings.
My first day out I made it nearly 2 telephone posts before I thought I was going to die.
I kept at it every weekday and even some weekend days.
In a short while I hit my 3rd post; then a newspaper box; then another post, and another. In a few weeks I’d made it around the block.
Yeah, seriously. I was that out of shape and that’s what the process can look like.
But I kept at it.
Within a year I was running for an hour or so in the morning and lifting weight in my apartment for an hour and half after work.
I’d dropped 50lbs, lost 8″ around my waist, and could wear Hugo Boss off the rack.
Yeah, I was a happy camper.
Then a friend turned me on to CrossFit.
My first workout felt like I was just starting again. I got my ass whooped. Bad.
I was in love.
And like all people in love, I needed to shout it from the rooftops.
Fast forward to November 2, 2005 and CrossFit Toronto officially opened.
Since then, Machiko and I have dedicated ourselves to helping as many people as we can to improve their fitness and life quality.

Do I need previous experience?
Not at all.
All newcomers to CrossFit and fitness in general are welcome!
What Can I Expect In A Class?
Classes are 60 minutes, usually have between 3 and 6 people, and are led by one of our coaches.
We warm-up, perform some strength and/or skill work, then follow that up with a conditioning workout.
Who are your members?
You'll hear 80’s, 90’s music in class for a reason: our members are professionals, business owners, and busy parents.
Just like you.
Here you’ll find kind, helpful people who encourage and motivate each other.
Is this is a competitive environment?
Simply put, no.
Sure, you may see some friendly competition going on.
But our focus is on getting better day by day; your true competition is you from yesterday.
We're serious about our training but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
How much does training cost?
Our memberships range between 23 and 53 per week. The most popular plan is our Silver option at 47 per week.
How long are your contracts?
We don’t have contracts.
All of our plans are billed monthly. You are free to stay or leave as you please.
What is the youngest / oldest you work with?
Generally our minimum age is 10. We can and do make exceptions, so, please speak with us if you have someone under 10.
We have no maxmium age provided your doctor has cleared you for exercise.
Do You Have Child Minding?
Children are always welcome, although we don't have official child minding services.
You may need to see to them if they need attention but there's often other children or parents around to help out.
Plus we've got WiFi if you'd like My Little Pony or Paw Patrol to help keep them occupied.
