We would like to extend a Big Congrats to our trainer, Leah, and to the voice of CrossFit Toronto, Siobhain, as they move on to pursue other CrossFit-related opportunities. But first, a brief history:

Leah’s first CrossFit workout was on Ocotber 29th, 2007, in our Bootcamp. In spite of the crazy early time (6am), her attendance was nearly perfect. No need to mention about the intensity she brought into her workouts (we all know how hard a worker she is) but it was the attention to detail that impressed John and I.   Just like many of you, she started doing pull-ups with a green band and swinging an 8kg kettlebell.

Exactly one year later, she started her new chapter at CrossFit Toronto as a trainer.  You all know what happened after that.  She was an unreachable athlete packed into a tiny body who swept the white board, putting her name everywhere, and even earning female first muscle up in our gym!  Of course, don’t forget about fun, energetic classes she lead… complete with an occassional, spontaneous running man.

Siobhain took our Introductory Program on June 5th, 2008 with John.  She was and still is a hard, hard working girl, who, despite always pushing herself to her limits, is always smiling and cheery!  She did anything, I mean ANYTHING to get better at her nemesis, the squat.  If someone gave her advice on how to fix it, she was on it before you knew it!  That’s how determined she was to conquer it!  She does not quit, she does not make excuses but she does keep working until she gets what she wants. She is certainly a strong girl.

What she brought into CrossFit Toronto is not only her determination to get better no matter what, but also her personality, shown everyday on the CrossFit Toronto website.  She brought something that we did not have before.  Her posts were always fun and educational.  To be honest, I looked forward to reading her post every morning at 5am before starting my day.  I will miss that first 10 minutes of my day.

This is a bittersweet moment.  We are proud to see them leaving the nest with confidence, but we are definitely going to feel incomplete without their presence and what they brought to CrossFit Toronto.

Leah, Siobhain, you will be missed greatly and we wish you all the best with your CrossFit adventures!

CrossFit Toronto is in the news, this time backed by a little star-power.  Check out the full Globe and Mail article here. The article is well-written, although it does include some less-than-useful advice concerning sit-ups and aerobic training.  Anyone who CrossFits actively knows full well where the “cardio” is, how aerobic capacity is developed, and how we protect our backs and spines.  Feel free to leave a comment, here or on the Globe and Mail site.

More shirtless fun…part 2 of the Bare or Not to Bare dilema.  Seems like we all should bare a little more!

Check out the Gallery for Aimee’s Bon Voyage workout pictures.  “FUN” had by all.

Last weekend of summer and the sun is sticking around.  Enjoy the outdoors.

Good luck to everyone taking on the big bad Level Assessment today!  Lift Heavy then Go Fast!

There are NO regular classes today!

You Will be Missed Quiet Warrior

I have posted this picture before.  This is Aimee after Eva.  She took on this nasty lady at 6am on a rainy cool May morning…and did not give up even though her hands had already given in to the bar early in the workout.  Luis was on his “hip recovery hiatus” and photographing the WOD’s during this time.  He put down his camera to run with Amy through her last round.  He perfectly captured Aimee’s spirit through his lens.

This is Aimee…a quiet warrior.  She fights but doesn’t boast.  She puts her whole being into her accomplishments.  There is no mediocre with Aimee, she makes a goal and never loses focus.

She is the girl on the WhiteBoard that all the PM’ers try to beat.  And when they can’t they wonder “how the heck did she do it!?”

She truly is the kindest, sweetest, badass you will come across…and that is why we are so very sad to be saying goodbye.

Aimee isn’t only brave in the gym, she’s incredibly brave outside too.  She has accepted a transfer with her company to take on a new role of Surety Manager, Western Operations.  I am not certain what Surety is, but I am SURE it’s important!

She’s got herself all set up with a place in Yaletown (read: hipster!)  Which just so happens to be a short commute to CrossFit Vancouver, home of two CrossFit Games competitors this year!

Aimee may be quiet, but she has made a big impact on us here at CFTO:

  • Easily my favourite Aimee moment is her getting her first muscle-up in front of a bunch of Army boys who were attempting, and failing, to get their first muscle-up.
We also shared a Gluten-Intolerance bond. :(

The Weirs have lots of love for Aimee

  • When I picture Aimee at home, she’s dehydrating anything and everything she can get her hands on. Chef Aimee has dreamed up all sorts of zaleo friendly dishes to help keep us all on track with food that is balanced, healthy AND delicious. Thanks Aimee! When I think of Aimee, I also think of rocking muscleups and frustrating double unders (Hey – we all have a movement/exercise that haunts us). The first time I saw Aimee socially outside of the gym, I didn’t recognize her. It took me about 10 seconds – for real.  And I’m not saying she’s all messed up at the gym.  But, she transformed from “ponytailed, laser focused killer Aimee” to “Flowing locks, killer shoes, all made-up Aimee”.  Amazing to be able to compete with the best of them at the gym (men and women) but still be a lovely lady at night!

  • Summer Solstice at the Armoury; Aimee gets first muscle up..in front of a few army boys with jaws on the floor! I believe she proceeded to climb a 30 foot rope, repetitively(exaggeration) not too long after that.   Xcaliber!! So jealous, I’m getting one.   She’s an early morning gal so I usually only see her a few times..however her WOD times and stats are always super motivating, a woman many of us aspire to catch up to.  Oh yeah, she had ridiculous results after going zaleo. Not surprising, but she really took it to the next level and generously took time to share her recipes and advice with her fellow Crossfitters. I think she has a cool gym bag, but I could be confusing her with someone else (totally irrelevant, yes I know).  We’re losing a power house to Vancouver, but she will be representing us quite nicely!

  • Aimee was in the first bootcamp I ever did and right from the start we immediately became the friendliest arch enemies I’ve ever had! :) It was always a battle to see who could get a pullup without a band first, who could deadlift 200# first, who could survive Fran. Pretty much anything metcon…. I knew I would be her eating dust… anything more strength based and I wanted her to eat my dust ;) I loved the challenge but I also loved the support we offered each other. If I hadn’t had her to “compete” with I probably never would have reached some of the awesome milestones I’ve reached today. She is also my role model for paleo living and I often think of her when I want to reach for something I shouldn’t…. “what would Aimee do?”, and then I go right to the jerky and fruit! ;) I’m in awe of her muscle-ups and can’t wait to send her video footage of my first muscle up! Of course… she’ll probably have 10 consecutive ones by then ;) Aimee – you are amazing and we are really really really going to miss you!

Cynthia (killa c’)

  • Aimee.  Where do I begin?  Seems like everything you touch turns to gold….i.e. ring dips, dehydrating gorgeous food, fashion! (yes I would see you ready for work from time to time at Starbucks), undeniable daily happiness, redesigning your body seamlessly and a visual anchor for me everyday that ‘things-are-gonna’-be-just-right-cause-Aimee-is-here.’  I am so happy for you that you have taken such a courageous leap clear across the country to head-up a new business venture, but I am sorry on two counts; one that I didn’t tell you how great you were everyday and two; I will definitely feel the loss of your presence and inspiration.  I hope we all can stay in touch with you!!

Always, Nancy xo

  • Let’s see…she is one of the strongest!!! that is for sure!

Kathy

  • Will greatly miss the daily ritual of watching Aimee’s brilliant muscle-ups: the almost-one, she got one! and another!! and another!!! I was like the beginner swimmer in water wings watching Michael Phelps break records all over the place; Aimee is my Michael Phelps. I’ll miss the ritual of my spectator sport.  Loved how Aimee took my, “So, tell me about callous care” question seriously, and proceeded to patiently explain the ins and outs of maintaining just the right level of tough skin to avoid blisters and prevent rips.  And, of course, the now infamous rope burn. Undoubtedly the worst (best?) CrossFit injury I’ve seen and a special little trophy for Aimee to prove to the world how incredibly tough she is (although she won’t, because she’s also so incredibly humble).  Vancouver’s gain is our loss. My 6 a.m.s just won’t be the same sans Aimee.

  • Aimee is a fighter. She always gives 100% effort on the workouts and when she has her mind set on a goal (um, lets think, muscle ups maybe??) she kept at it until it was accomplished. I’m  going to miss working out with her at the very early 6am time slot. Not only an incredible athlete, but always encouraging and lets not forget she makes a mean paleo muffin and anything dehydrated!

Leah

Aimee, we can’t say enough about you as an incredible person or athlete.  You inspire, motivate…and keep us all waiting for the next delish dehydrated or paleo creation!

We will miss you dearly, but wish you all the best in Vancouver.  Knock em dead (as you no doubt will).

Stay in touch…and visit often.   Lots of Love, the CrossFit Toronto Crew!

Aimee created today’s workout.  It’s a killer.  In true warrior fashion, she is doing it at 6am with her regular crew, and again at 6:30pm.

If you aren’t too mad at her by the end (and can still feel your limbs) please join us in wishing Aimee all the best with cocktails and friends at The Comrade (big “C” on the front)

758 Queen St E (east of Broadview).

The Bon Voyage starts at 8:30pm.
