People in our CrossFit Toronto Neighbourhood
Lou Cerqua – “…CrossFit is the ultimate total body workout. I swear it was created for fighters cause all of its movements and training is sport specific, you develop such a strong core, muscle endurance and cardio that is all transferable to what I do. I feel like a monster everytime I compete after training my butt off with CrossFit, it makes the difference in the final round that’s for sure…“ Read on
Deanne Ashford – “…There is something about physical challenge that reveals a lot about a person, and I like that. I have never seen someone stop or give up on a WOD ever. So I think the thing I like most about CrossFit is that it attracts the sort of people I want in my life, and in my kids’ lives. The CrossFit method is now part of our lives. I was lucky enough to complete a few certifications over here. When we return to Australia I plan to open a CrossFit affiliate in Wollongong and share the love…” Read on
Jeffrey Elliott – “…Forget about my body and the physical changes it’s taken on. Before CrossFit came into my life (or I came into my CrossFit life) my mind was weak. I would have to drag myself to the gym on rare occasions and my intensity was not even in the same ball park as to what I have today. Pushing into that state of discomfort is something my life so needs. Like Peter told me the first day do the best you can Jeff. Slowly my best becomes better and better, and my times become less and less. That’s why I CrossFit…“ Read on
Natalie Colosimo – “…I’m stronger and braver, willing to take more risks, to challenge myself. I started to downhill ski again after 15 years; I bought a new bike, and look forward to exercise. I’m more focused on being active and healthy now, than I have ever been in my life…” Read on
As an avid bootcamper, currently in my 6th consecutive camp, I can confidently say that CrossFit Toronto is revolutionary and completely unique. Their training methods are exciting, effective and addictive. Where else can you feel like a kid again, laugh so hard you feel like peeing, and get in awesome shape all while exercising?!
CrossFit Toronto has shown me how to enjoy working out again. It's not a daunting task anymore. I look forward sweating and pushing myself farther and farther every workout. Every class is different, challenges vary & the combinations of movements is always new. The exercises are simple and effective. Anyone can do it anytime - at any age. John & Machiko are a perfect compliment to each other and are a joy to be around. I have so much fun at bootcamp, it gives my stressful career and busy life an therapeutic release.
John & Machiko are true professionals. They gracefully motivate everyone with encouragement and compassion. They ensure success for all, and it is genuine. Safe training and good overall health is the goal at CrossFit. I am so grateful CrossFit moved to the East End. It has provided me with the opportunity to achieve a life long goal that was quickly becoming and blurry memory. To be in shape and stay in shape. I have learned easy ways to efficiently gain results. It is a common sense approach to weight training and cardiovascular health. I have never worked out so hard in my life and love every minute of it while doing it. I feel challenged every time I workout at CrossFit. I NEVER felt like that at any other "Big Box" workout place.
Thank you John & Machiko / CrossFit Toronto, its a pleasure & reward to start my day off with you. I know I am a CrossFit "LIFE -ER". I would recommend your organization to any and all of my clients, family & friends. I don't think my body would have recovered from having Connor without CrossFit. It's also a real testament to you that my 2 year old (Connor) loves CrossFit so much he manages to weasel his way into the car every morning recently so he can watch the workouts. He just loves it and is learning healthy habits too - and has a killer burpee (not to mention his flying arm bars - thanks to Daddy).Marnie Amodeo, CEO

As a not very fit person over 55 years of age I found Cross Fit to be very personalized and I enjoy the individual instruction given to my fitness development level. I am never made to feel uncomfortable as everyone can work at their own level. I like the variety of exercises and the challenge of bettering my performance with each class. It is an excellent cardio workout for any age or fitness level.

I am skeptical. I had heard through a martial arts association (The JKD Family) of mine how CrossFit has been very beneficial to their recent tournament successes. I had also noted the physical changes in people that have been doing CrossFit for a while. So I decided to check it out, however I was very doubtful of the value of the workouts over the stuff I have been doing or I should say avoiding for years.
My first encounter with John at CrossFit Toronto was a delight. I had my first intelligent discussion about body mechanics with a fitness guy. Not only did we discuss elements about squats and basic body positioning John was the first fitness guy to apply adaptability concepts into a program in my experience. He did not even try to sell me anything!
CrossFit is result oriented. Every workout is measurable. The data that is generated helped me make connections to health and fitness in deep and personal ways. In the last 5 months of training in CrossFit I have achieved: 2 inches off the waist, 27 pounds of fat, my times on the standard workouts have more than halved. Here are a couple of examples: Grace- I started at 20:15 a couple weeks ago I did Grace in 7:48, Karen- I started at 12:06 and last week I did Karen in 5:40.
I have used CrossFit to help me coach the fitness in my Rugby program. In the spring of 2007 my boys and I took 30 minutes to set up, do and take down the workout. Although we had a love/hate relationship with the workouts, as I am sure most people do, we really loved them in the second half of our games where we scored most of points. An unexpected benefit is that some of the boys have taken a hard look at their own fitness and see CrossFit as an excellent way to improve their fitness and performance. I am proud of these young men. I am very excited that the next generation of coaching will be that much better because of their exposure to CrossFit.
I like CrossFit. The results speak for themselves. I like this program because it appeals to my competitiveness and therefore forced me to look at myself more critically. I am a type of person that does not care about a 6 pack abs in relation to eating a double chocolate cake. (The whole damned thing!) But I am twisted enough to forgo the cake, even the tiniest bit of it, to shave off a few seconds on my best times. This connection is important to me and my health. My family will benefit as I will be able to be as involved as I want rather than as involved as I can. Anyone reading who wants to make a change, doesn't mind HARD work and is results oriented should get to CrossFit Toronto as soon as humanly possible.
PS it is also a lot of fun to be able to outlast men 15 years younger in sparring matches in my martial arts classes.S. Horsch
As a soldier, I must be in the best possible physical condition in order to do my job as effectively as possible and I thought being a 23 year old soldier would prepare me for the physical and mental challenges that Crossfit would throw at me. My first Crossfit session several months ago had me sprawled out on the mats and feeling like I'd just been hit by a train.
Since then, my fitness has skyrocketed. I have seen major gains in strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Workouts that once took me 30 minutes to complete, I now can do in 13. I followed some great diet tips provided by John and Machiko and I was able to shave off 6% bodyfat from my frame. For those of you that work out for a nice body, here is a word of advice. If you work out for fitness, the looks come along with it. Since I have become a CrossFitter, I have never looked back at any other type of training.Gunner Alex Naraine

Crossfit has changed my life. There, I said it. I don't want to sound trite but that is the most concise description I could come up with.
John, Machiko and Crossfit Toronto have made me stronger, faster, leaner, more powerful and more muscular. They have increased my endurance, stamina and confidence. They have improved my balance and agility. I feel younger, healthier and my hair is growing back. Ok, so maybe not the hair, but you get the drift.
All that through intelligent training, some good diet tips, friendly atmosphere and an obvious love for what they do. I have made strides in so many areas of my life that it is not the same as it was before.
I had worked out in a traditional gym with isolation movements for over 2 years before discovering CFTO. My first workout with John ended abruptly after 2 out of 3 rounds - with me panting on the ground wondering what the last 2 years had really done for me. Now, a mere 6 months later I am performing workouts that I would have thought impossible previously.
Now I have grown a love for exercising that I didn't have before. I am taking my kids to Crossfit family workouts and am proud that my children will see a strong father who can keep up with them (for the time being at least!).
THANK YOU CROSSFIT TORONTOJason N.
I was first attracted to CrossFit because I was looking for a Bootcamp program to add some variety to my workouts and I had heard from a friend that CrossFit Toronto offered a great Bootcamp program. Once I finished Bootcamp, I was so happy with the program that I became hooked on CrossFit and have been attending the evening classes ever since. I used to spend an hour doing cardio and 30 minutes doing weights at the gym 4 days a week and now I get better results in less than half the time! My performance has improved so much - I am stronger and have more energy than I ever had. I am improving every week and continue to impress myself with my development.
CrossFit classes are small and therefore you get a lot of personal attention. John and Machiko ensure that you are setup for success and they are extremely supportive and motivating. It's like having your own personal trainer who is constantly monitoring and supporting your performance development so that you continue to see results. The personal coaching ensures that you never hit a plateau and every workout is different which makes them fun. I never thought you could have this much enjoyment from working out! I will never go back to my old workout routine again. I would highly recommend CrossFit to anyone! It does not matter what your age or current level of fitness is, they will tailor the workouts to meet your specific needs.Summer V.
I love CrossFit. I have been working out or exercising most of my adult life and I find CrossFit a culmination of my many experiences. The workout is intense; I love that it is never the same and therefore making use of my whole body; I love that anyone in any condition can participate to their own level. I was so happy I encouraged my out-of-shape mother to participate which she has and even she is happy! Thanks very much to Machiko and John who make the whole experience comfortable and a pleasure and hard work all at once.

I particularly like CrossFit's concept of functional strength training. Workouts are shorter but much higher in intensity and involve the body as a whole - not just isolated parts.
Weekly CrossFit classes have increased my overall strength and cardio conditioning and CrossFit Bootcamp got me into the best shape I have ever been in. Pushing myself to my limits in the gym has given me the mental toughness to push myself further in my sport and achieve goals I never thought possible before.
CrossFit is adaptable to the fitness level of each person and each is encouraged to go to the edge of their own ability. John and Machiko know how motivate you to keep going, even when you think you can't. They are amazing.

I love CrossFit because it challenges me to work harder, to try new exercise and to get stronger. The group setting is extremely motivating and I've met a lot of great people in the classes. The flexibility of the schedule is key for me as I travel a lot for work and the instructors are fantastic and inspiring. I am hooked!!

At CrossFit Toronto the workout changes every day, so the variety and a group atmosphere help keep me motivated.

At 40 years of age I was asked to play on a competitive women's basketball team made up primarily of women in their 20's. Most of the league were made up of ex-CIS college players in their late twenties. I got smoked, my confidence was destroyed and I quit the team after a few months. I decided if I wanted to continue to play this sport into my forties (and not just jack 3's from the corner), I was going have to improve my foot speed, lateral movement and my power and strength. My friends at the Windish Agency in Chicago had been telling me about this program they were doing called CrossFit. They told me that there was absolutely a CrossFit gym somewhere in Toronto and that I should look into it. A year went by but I finally made it into the bootcamp at the beginning of Dec. 2009. While I am nowhere near where I want to end up (the sky is the limit, right?) my game has improved exponentially. I have more legs in my jump shot (box jumps?), my first step is much quicker and my stamina is at least twice what it was.
Thanks CrossFit Toronto!Amy Hersenhoren
Every session at CrossFit Toronto is a new and varied experience. The support and coaching is exceptional and the equipment is first rate. I love the atmosphere and the fact that the space has no mirrors or change rooms - get in, get to work and get it done! Also, knowing that the people you work out with nearly every day will be there, working hard, is motivation to go and to keep going.

For years I've been hitting the gym, doing the same monotonous routine, with the same monotonous equipment, with very little results to show for it. In the past two months that I've been doing CrossFit, I have done exercises once thought inconceivable - handstands, pull-ups, ring dips!! Weight loss is a given and the gains in strength and power are immeasurable.
CrossFit's about intensity and empowerment. It's about setting limits and goals and then shattering them. It's a place where competition and camaraderie can co-exist. It's about pain and perseverance. It's about training for life, and not just a sport or activity. It's about failing in order to succeed. It's about maximum results in the least amount of time. And most importantly, it's about having fun.Trish
Hello you all,
I just wish my English could be better to express my gratitude. My name is Francisco DÃez, and I'm from Spain. As firefighter, physical training and psychological resilience are capitol. I found and amazing support at CrossFit Toronto to improve on both of them, where I step in for a few days. Since the beginning Paul was awesome on the tips for the execution, giving always useful information to improve the movements (his "you have to feel like" are great). Jeff gave me the key points to break my record on the clean and jerk. And John and her wife gave me the inspiration, leading by the example, pushing harder, walking longer, giving it all. The planning of the training is incredible, hiding behind. Maybe you don't know, but they are carefully pulling the strings, making you stronger, faster, more resistant, on your body and mind. Now, I'm in Washington DC, training at Primal, prior to my trip to Salt Lake City and my certification seminar. I keep on my mind the friendly environment of CrossFit Toronto and their accent on education and hard work. Hope some day could go back to Logan Ave and hit the deck with such a good coaches and fellows. Thank you so much.Francisco DÃez
With CrossFit I'm enjoying working out for the first time in my life. The CrossFit classes are small and intimate with great one-on-one attention from the trainers. I also really enjoy the camaraderie between myself and my fellow classmates. I feel great, have higher energy levels and looking good is an added bonus.

Though I was only able to do it for a month before leaving town, I’m glad I did. It was an awesome introduction to crossfit. The instruction was tailored exactly to my needs and the community was supportive and caring. Every workout was a challenge and I feel fitter than ever thanks to this methodology and instruction. Thank you John, for all your advice and instruction.
