Say What?
CHEST UP!
Strong Back!
BIG SHRUG!
Drive with your hips!
Fast Elbows!
Any of these sound familiar?! CUES! The greatest gift our coaches can give us. Some of us may be very familiar with certain phrases…ahem, “chest up”…making us well aware of what needs some work!
Some cues are motivational. “Drive, drive, drive!”
Some cues are form or technique reminders…“Big Shrug!”
A good, properly timed cue can make the difference between failure or completion of a movement. Most important, is LISTENING to the cues and REACTING.
A few weeks back, Peter cued me to “drive my head through” on my press. A cue as familiar as “Chest Up” to me! Difference being, this time I listened! Turns out…it worked! Low and behold I hit a Shoulder Press PR that day from a few simple but critical words!
What’s your cue?
Here are some common Clean mistakes and potential fixes. Don’t try to get them all at once! Pick your greatest weakness and really focus on it.
And if those don’t work…“hit your boobs!”

I was pulling 315 in the deadlift at the Armoury crosspit. A 48th Highlander fellow named Paul started to tweak my form. It resulted in a new PR of 400 for me.
